I was adding product descriptions and configuring my J2Store page when the 4 X 3 layout changed. I believe there is a missing </div> tag in there. I didn't touch the code so have no idea how to fix it.

Hi,

If you did not change anything, the only difference is the missing price. Try adding a price and see if the layout is restored.

Switching to catalog mode messed up the layout. :o I don't want prices to show though and need the features of catalog mode.

As an alternative, you could disable the price in the menu for the shop or by css.

Loaded the second product and again got the same messed up layout. Not sure why this happening.

the div col-sm-3 is nesting under the previous one. I think there is a missing closing div tag.

The disabled price was the issue. I fixed within the j2store's php.

You can update, it won't mess the layout.
Always remember to do a backup always before you update anything.
